This year we enjoyed the beautiful home of Gary and Terese Grondin, in a festive holiday atmosphere with great wines and food.

The theme was French, and the wines were Champagnes.

The hors d’ouvres were many and varied, and demonstrated the culinary skills of our members. The winners of the friendly competition were:

  • First:        Bernd Mueller (Recipe)
  • Second:    Gary Grondin
  • Third:       Marlene Heglund

The wines were selected and served by Jackie and Frank Carson.  Selection was based on those most popular and available in this region. Frank did his yeoman service with the pours, with support from Jackie who also rang the bell announcing that the next wine was available for serving.

Six makers were represented with different style and constituent balance.  The Veuve Cliquot, the Roederer, and the Nicholas Feuillate contained Pinot Meunier as well as the more conventional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  The Roederer had some of its base undergo malolactic fermentation.  The Lallier, from a small producer, contained some reserve wine from older vintages and all of its grapes were from Grand Cru vineyards.

All but the Moet Chandon (no rating found) were rated 91 or 92.  They were all very fine Champagnes.  Prices ranged from $39 to $40 per bottle.

It was an excellent start to the holiday season and much enjoyed by all, thanks to our gracious hosts.
