This Summer Wine Trip was planned by Jon and Joan Reed and Max and Pat VomSteeg.
The group of 10 AWS couples met around noon, Friday, at Vineland Estates Winery for an initial wine tour get-together, headcount, maps, and a delicious lunch. An ‘open to the air’ reserved dining area had been set aside specially for AWS. Pat VomSteeg presented each couple with a surprise wine gift bag full of goodies. The Niagara New Vintage Wine Festival had begun, so couples could try other tastings on their own.
The group participated in a mid-afternoon tasting at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery. The event began with a complimentary sparkling wine, followed by a tasting of benchmark Baco Noirs in the winery’s private art-gallery tasting room. Members then visited quaint downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake and a few other local wineries before arriving for a private tour and complimentary tasting at Peller Estates Winery before joining a 7:00 pm AWS Group Dinner in Peller Estate’s Private Dining Room. The setting was gracious and everyone agreed the dinner was outstanding.
Saturday morning began for most with extravagant breakfasts at member’s B&B’s and morning walks before joining the group at Strewn Winery. The tour of the winery and tasting was followed by lunch at their gourmet winery restaurant. Following lunch, a vineyard and winery tour occurred at the Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery.
An unexpected highlight was a group visit to Stratus Winery, one of the newest and arguably best wineries in the region, where most agreed the new winemaker has developed some of the highest quality wines available in Niagara on the Lake.
The group met for an evening vineyard and winery tour at the Hillebrand Estate Winery, sampling a variety of complimentary wines at one of the oldest and historic in the region, before a final AWS Group Dinner at the Hillebrand Estate Winery Restaurant. The sunset made this a perfect time to sit in their gourmet restaurant, overlooking the vineyard, and enjoy a fine dinner with fresh spring ingredients including asparagus and goat cheese.
Sunday was a day of recuperation with some members lingering to take in a play at the Shaw Festival before a leisurely return to Detroit.
