This tasting was organized by Frank and Jackie Carson, Ron and Marlene Heglund and Chris and Sharon Arnold. Twenty four members attended.
Frank and Ron discussed the Burgundy region and its districts and presented the wines. We learned that Burgundy has been a winemaking region for centuries, and presently has some 30,000 growers and 700 appellations. While many growers still sell to a negotiant, about 40% of the wine is now estate bottled. The vast number of sellers makes finding the better wines a challenging task.
The wines in this tasting came from four of the major districts. All but two of the wines, the aperitif Chablis and the final 2003 Rully, were of 100% Chardonnay. Those two also held Pinot Noir content.
While all of the wines were well chosen, the favorite was the 2004 St. Veran Terres Noires, closely followed by the 2003 Rully Mont Palais Premier Cru. The 2001 St. Aubin also stood out as one of the best.
The cheeses were Bucheron, and Compte from France, and Swiss Emmental, all excellent, and selected by Jackie Carson from Hirt’s.
The tasting closed with coffee and cookies, turtle chocolate and a crispy crunchy oatmeal, by Marlene Heglund and reportedly made of ingredients from the Huron Valley appellation.
A very good time was had by all.
