As our autumn season began, our organizers, Rick and Julie Ganfield and Dolph and Diane Lohwasser, introduced us to the art of matching wines and pizzas. This is not a trivial matter, as we learned.
But first, for the social period, where an aperitif sparkling wine is a chapter favorite, the Gloria Ferrrar was excellent.
To start the tasting Rick introduced the first pizza, the Via Bianco, which was made of mild cheeses and was subtly herbal. It was a gentle pizza needing a wine with acidity and flavor. The selected white wines were fine matches with their crispness and flavors.
The second pizza, the Ciao Bella, is also known as the Pizza Margherita, named for the queen of Italy who in 1889 had a local pizza maker provide a variety of pizzas for her. This one was her favorite, and it also held the green, red and white colors of the Italian flag. This simple pizza with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and garlic, in a tomato sauce, has some acidity of its own, along with soft garlic and basil flavors. A red wine with some acidity is a good complement and the Chianti was a great traditional matchup as was the excellent Malbec.
The third, the Amore Roma, was full of Italian sausage and pepperoni, along with mushrooms and cheese. It was spicy, earthy and meaty. It demanded a wine with some tannin, and the Zinfandel and Pinot Noir were equal to the task. Both were good complements. Rick encouraged everyone to save wines and pizza for other comparisons as we went through the courses and some observed that the Pinot Noir was also very good with the Ciao Bella and that the Malbec was very good with the Amore Roma.
Wine with pizza is not new, but the art of matching has recently received attention from the Wine Spectator and from Steve DeLong. (See reference below.) So our organizers not only favored us with expertise in a contemporary subject but made it a very tasty and flavorful experience as well.
In an addendum to the tasting, as we took an added taste of wine and pizza here and there, Dolph presented us with copious information on wine information on the web. He covered the subjects of Education, Shopping, Food and Wine Pairing, and Cellaring. It was very enlightening to us and the information will certainly be used. A listing of the sites is presented below.
We closed the meeting with coffee and Peanut Butter Chunk Chocolate Cookies made by Julie and Chocolate Chip Cranberry Cookie Bars made by Diane, both superb.
